Playing Chambers Bay
Chambers Bay opened in 2007 on the site of a former sand-and-gravel mine above Puget Sound, and eight years later it held the U.S. Open, the first ever played in the Pacific Northwest. Robert Trent Jones Jr. shaped it as a treeless links, all humps, hollows, and fescue, with a single lone fir standing near the 15th green. From the Black tees it runs 7,158 yards, par 72, rating 74.4 with a slope of 138.
Jordan Spieth won that 2015 U.S. Open on greens the pros grumbled about all week, part of the price of a bold, walking-only design that never pretends to be a country club. Pierce County owns it and KemperSports runs it, so it stays public. The 7th is the stroke-index one hole, and the ground game matters as much here as anywhere in America, where run-up shots are often the smart play.
Walking is the only option, but the course hands out complimentary push carts and runs a caddie program to soften the climb over the dunes. It has also held the 2010 U.S. Amateur and the 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur, with the U.S. Junior Amateur due in 2027 and the U.S. Amateur returning in 2033. Five tees range from the 7,158-yard Black down to the 4,708-yard Teal.

Chambers Bay FAQ
What does the average golfer shoot at Chambers Bay?
Across 2 rounds posted by SimplyStroke golfers, the average 18-hole score is 86.5, about +14.5 to par. The lowest posted round is a 84.
Is Chambers Bay walkable?
Chambers Bay is walking only, and there is no riding-cart option because of the steep, dune-covered terrain. To help, the course provides complimentary push carts and runs a caddie program. Expect real elevation change across the round as the holes climb and drop around the old mine site above Puget Sound. Comfortable shoes and a reasonable fitness level go a long way.
How much does it cost to play Chambers Bay?
For 2026, dynamic starting rates run $109 to $209 for Pierce County residents and $149 to $325 for non-residents, depending on the month. From April through October, tax-inclusive advance-booking rates land between $300 and $425. Because pricing shifts with season and demand, the same tee time can cost very differently in July than in January. Residents get a meaningful discount.
Who designed Chambers Bay?
Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Chambers Bay, which opened in 2007 on a reclaimed sand-and-gravel mine owned by Pierce County. He built a wide, treeless links in the British and Irish tradition, moving huge amounts of earth into dunes and letting fescue define the edges. The USGA chose it to host a U.S. Open barely a year after it opened, a rare vote of confidence in a new course.
What are the tees at Chambers Bay?
Five tees: Black at 7,158 yards (74.4/138), Blue at 6,748, Sand at 6,345, White at 5,822, and Teal at 4,708. The Black is the U.S. Open tee and a serious test of length and stamina. Most public players enjoy the course from the Sand or White markers, where the links contours stay fun rather than punishing. Ratings match the official scorecard.
