The rundown

Playing TPC Sawgrass (Stadium)

TPC Sawgrass and its Stadium Course opened in 1980 as the PGA Tour's own championship course. Pete Dye designed it with Alice Dye, carving fairways and greens out of Florida swamp and stacking spectator mounds around them, the idea that gave stadium golf its name. From the back tees, marked THE PLAYERS, it measures 7,352 yards, par 72, rating 76.8 with a slope of 155.

The 17th is the reason most people know the place: a par 3 of only 141 yards from the championship tee to a green surrounded entirely by water. It looks simple and drowns dozens of balls every tournament. Dye built difficulty into the whole round, though, with the 7th playing as the stroke-index one hole and railroad-tie bulkheads lurking on holes you would not expect. THE PLAYERS has been contested here since 1982.

The PGA Tour famously bought the land for one dollar, and the course has anchored its schedule ever since. Green fees swing with demand: rack rates run about $550 in summer and $750 in peak season, with dynamic pricing climbing toward $1,000 in the weeks right after THE PLAYERS. That fee includes a cart, a group forecaddie, and range balls. Four tee sets step down from the tips to 5,019 yards.

Common questions

TPC Sawgrass (Stadium) FAQ

What does the average golfer shoot at TPC Sawgrass (Stadium)?

Across 10 rounds posted by SimplyStroke golfers, the average 18-hole score is 92, about +20 to par. The lowest posted round is a 86.

How long is the island-green 17th at TPC Sawgrass?

The par-3 17th plays 141 yards from THE PLAYERS tees to a green ringed completely by water, with only a narrow walkway connecting it to land. From the forward tees it is shorter, but the shot never gets easy, because the wind and the pressure do the damage. It is one of the most recognizable holes in golf and the signature of Pete Dye's design.

How much does it cost to play TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course?

Rack rates for 2026 run about $550 from June through August and $750 in peak season. Dynamic pricing pushes rounds toward $1,000 in the weeks just after THE PLAYERS, when demand spikes. The rate includes a cart, a group forecaddie, and range balls. Prices move with the calendar, so booking well ahead helps lock in a lower number.

Is TPC Sawgrass walkable?

Walking is allowed only with a walking caddie. Groups that ride get a forecaddie, and the course is cart-path only. The Stadium routing covers a lot of ground through the Florida wetlands, so most players ride. If you want to walk, arrange a caddie when you book. Either way the round is designed to feel like the setup THE PLAYERS field sees.

Who designed TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course?

Pete Dye designed the Stadium Course with Alice Dye, and it opened in 1980. Pete's routing pioneered the stadium-golf concept, using grassed spectator mounds so crowds could watch from above. Alice is often credited with the idea for the island-green 17th. Together they built a course that rewards precise, controlled ball-striking over raw power from every tee.
